La victoria de Gales sobre Australia por 29-25 en el Tokyo Stadium y por la segunda fecha del Grupo D en la IX Copa del Mundo Japón 2019, puso en evidencia a los Dragones Rojos como primeros candidatos a cuartos de final por la parte baja del cuadro donde se cruzarán con el grupo C, de Inglaterra, Argentina y Francia. Gales entrenado por el neozelandés Warren Gatland, puso un pie en los cuartos de final y se propone como principal contendiente al título mundial después de ganar el  Seis Naciones 2019 con una segunda victoria sucesiva que podría conducir a un choque en cuartos con los posibles segundos del grupo C: Francia o Argentina. Pero Australia apunta a un empate con Inglaterra, quien es entrenado por el ex entrenador de los Wallabies, el australiano-japonés Eddie Jones, por lo que espera en una reacción de sus mejores hombres como el wing Adam Ashley-Cooper, el full back Dane Haylett-Petty, el capitán y flanker Michael Hooper y el apertura Bernard Foley. Gales se hace fuerte con figuras como el centro Hadleigh Parkes, el medio scrum Gareth Davies y los aperturas  Dan Biggar primero y Rhys Patchell después  y que  contribuyó con 14 puntod tras reemplazar a Biggar.  A Australia le queda enfrentar a Uruguay el sábado 5 de octubre en el Oita Dome y a Georgia el sábado 12 en el Ecopa Stadium de Shizuoka. A Gales le queda enfrentar a Fidji el miércoles 9 de octubre en el Oita Dome y a Uruguay el domingo 13 en el Umakana Yokana Stadium de Kumamoto.

Wales trained by New Zealander Warren Gatland, set foot in the quarterfinals and is proposed as the main contender for the world title after winning the Six Nations 2019 with a second successive victory that could lead to a quarterfinal clash with possible seconds in Pool C: France or Argentina.
