Tras la tarjeta roja que recibió contra Inglaterra por parte del árbitro galés Nigel Owens, en su encuentro del Grupo C de la Copa Mundial, el segunda línea porteño Tomás Lavanini, fue expulsado a los 18 minutos en el partido Inglaterra-Argentina, el sábado, cuando su hombro se conectó con la cabeza del centro inglés Owen Farrell. Los Pumas  entrenados por el porteño Mario Ledesma estaban perdiendo por 5-3 al momento de la expulsión, para caer por 39-10 ante Inglaterra en el Estadio Ajinomoto de Tokio, lo que puso fin a las posibilidades de Argentina de clasificar a cuartos de final. La World Rugby en una declaración, dijo hoy: “Lavanini asistió a una audiencia disciplinaria en Tokio el 7 de octubre, ante un panel judicial independiente presidido por Adam Casselden SC (Australia) con el ex entrenador internacional Frank Hadden (Escocia) y el ex árbitro internacional Donal Courtney (Irlanda)”. Para señalar que “Lavanini admitió el acto de juego sucio y aceptó que justificaba una tarjeta roja. Aceptó que, dado su historial disciplinario anterior, no tenía derecho al descuento completo del 50 por ciento desde el punto de entrada de seis partidos”. Precisado el comunicado: “Habiendo considerado todas las pruebas y después de escuchar al jugador y su representante legal, el panel impuso una sanción de cuatro partidos". Por lo que el jugador porteño se perderá el partido de grupo restante de Argentina contra Estados Unidos del miércoles 9 de octubre, y los próximos tres partidos en su nuevo club, el  Leicester Tigers de la Premiership inglesa. “Podrá jugar a partir del 1º de noviembre". To point out that “Lavanini admitted the act of foul play and accepted that he justified a red card. He accepted that, given his previous disciplinary history, he was not entitled to the full 50 per cent discount from the six-game entry point”.  The statement said: "Having considered all the tests and after listening to the player and his legal representative, the panel imposed a penalty of four matches".  Therefore, the Buenos Aires´s  player will miss the remaining pool  match of Argentina against United States on Wednesday, October 9, and the next three games in his new club, the Leicester Tigers of the English Premiership.
