PUMAS VS ALL BLACKS, EL DESAFÍO INFINITO

El sábado en el estadio “Único” de La Plata, Pumas y All Blacks se enfrentarán por vigésima vez. La primera confrontación se remonta al 30 de octubre de 1976, en el antiguo estadio de Ferro Carril Oeste de Buenos Aires, donde Nueva Zelanda batió Argentina por 21-9 y una semana más tarde por 26-6.

Hoy son los tiempos de dos referentes de mil batallas en las filas de Nueva Zelanda como el octavo y capitán Richie Mc Caw y el hoocker Keven Mealamu y por el lado de Argentina, de otro combatiente, su pilar Rodrigo Roncero y de un apertura de la clase y jerarquía como la de Juan Martín Hernández.

Ellos hacen recordar otros protagonistas de los Pumas en 1985: Gustavo Milano y Eliseo Branca y en la apertura a Hugo Porta (3 penales y 1 drop), enfrentando los  All Blacks: Gary Whetton y Andy Haden y al apertura Wayne Smith. Hubo triunfo visitante de 33-20 ese 26 de octubre de 1985 en Ferro.

Lo de Hugo Porta fue excepcional ya que ese inolvidable segundo test del 2 de noviembre de 1985 encendió pasiones  con cuatro penales y tres drops. Hubiera sido triunfo argentino con el scrum en la tierra prometida y el octavo Ernesto Ure cometiendo knock-on al pretender zambullirse. Y hubo empate de 21-21-

Eran tiempos en que Los Pumas recibían All Blacks al final de una gira por las Islas Británicas, donde cayeron ante los Dragones Rojos de Gales por 20-19 el sábado 16 de octubre de 1976 en el “Arms Park” de Cardiff, por penal al cuello del centro Alejandro Travaglini al full back John Peter Rees Williams.

Entre el 8 y 15 de septiembre de 1979, los Pumas enfrentaron a los All Blacks en la recordada primera gira, dejando buena imagen en partidos provinciales y los tests de Dunedin y Wellington, donde cayeron por 18-9 y 15-6, respectivamente, pero con el agregado del viento y la lluvia en  Wellington, “the Wind City”.

Luego en 1987 en ocasión de la primera copa mundial organizada por Australia y Nueva Zelanda, los Pumas enfrentaron a los All Blacks en la primera ronda clasificatoria el 1 de junio en el Athletic Park de Wellington cayendo por 46-15.

En 1989, los All Blacks fueron anfitriones de los Pumas en la gira argentina de seis partidos provinciales con dos tests  disputados el primero el 15 de julio en el “Carisbrook” de Dunedin con triunfo local de 60-9 y el segundo el 29 de julio en el “Athletic Park” de Wellington, para el doblete de 49-12.

Después, entre el 6 y 13 de julio de 1991, en otro estadio de fútbol, el de Vélez Sarsfield en Buenos Aires, Los Pumas fueron vencido por los All Blacks por 28-14, y 36-6 respectivamente.

Entre el 21 y 28 de junio de 1997, los All Blacks recibieron a los Pumas en la doble confrontación del “Athletic Park” de Wellington y del “Rugby Park” de Hamilton (ambos en la isla Norte), con victorias contundentes que representan plusmarcas: la primera por 93-8 (la más alta de la historia) y por 62-10.

En el nuevo milenio, hubo en 2001 una doble confrontación en ambos países, comenzando el 23 de junio en el “Jade Stadium” de Christchurch, donde los All Blacks resolvieron con autoridad el desafío por 67-19. Mientras que el 1 de diciembre en el “Monumental” de Núñez, ganaron apenas por 24-20.

Cabe recordar que en la última jugada, una pelota que el bonaersense Felipe Contepomi despejó sin alcanzar el lateral fue bien aprovechada por el octavo Scott Robertson que se zambulló a la tierra prometida, convirtiendo Andrew Merthens, poniendo a Nueva Zelanda adelante por 24-20.

El 26 de junio de 2004, en el “Waikato Stadium” de Hamilton, los Pumas fueron batidos sin contemplaciones por los All Blacks (ya entrenados por Graham Henry) con el marcador de 41-7.

Otra vez en Argentina, el 24 de junio de 2006, los Pumas volvieron a recibir a los All Blacks en el “José Amalfitani” de Vélez Sársfield en Buenos Aires y en un encuentro muy equilibrado hubo victoria con dificultad para los visitantes del Pacífico Sur, por 25-19.

Ya en el mundial 2011, y en cuartos de final de la VII Copa del Mundo, el sábado 9 de octubre, los All Blacks superaron a los Pumas por 33-10 en el Eden Park de Auckland.

Finalmente, en el marco de la primera Personal Rugby Championship, el pasado sábado 8 de setiembre en el “Westpac Stadium” de Wellington, Nueva Zelanda se impuso a Argentina por 21-5 en la tercera fecha del 4 Naciones.

Por lo que se llevan disputados 19 partidos jugados, 18 victorias de Nueva Zelanda y sólo un empate pudieron rescatar los argentinos, que sumaron 225 puntos y recibieron 719 y que apoyaron 17 tries y sufrieron 89.

PUMAS VS ALL BLACKS INFINITE CHALLENGE

On Saturday at the “Único” Stadium of La Plata City, Pumas and All Blacks will meet for the twentieth time. The first confrontation dates back to October 30, 1976, in the old Ferro Carril Oeste Stadium in Buenos Aires, where New Zealand beat Argentina 21-9 and a week later by 26-6.

The Hugo Porta performance was a exceptional since that memorable second test of the November 2, 1985 ignited passions with four penalties and three drops. Argentine triumph would have been the scrum in the promised land but the number eighth Ernesto Ure making knock-on by attempting to dive. And there was a tie of 21 all.

Was a time when Los Pumas received All Blacks at the end of a tour of the British Isles, where they lost to the Welsh Red Dragons 20-19 in injury time on Saturday October 16, 1976 at the Cardiff "Arms Park" by high tackle of center Alejandro Travaglini to full back John Peter Rees Williams.

Between 8 and 15 September 1979, the Pumas faced the All Blacks in the memorable first tour, leaving good image in provincial matches and tests of Dunedin and Wellington, where they fell to 18-9 and 15-6, respectively, but with the addition of wind and rain on Wellington, "the Wind City".

Then, in 1987 at the first World Cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand, the Pumas faced the All Blacks in the first qualifying round on June 1 at Athletic Park in Wellington falling 46-15.

Between 21 and 28 June 1997 in New Zealand, the All Blacks are winners over the Pumas at "Athletic Park" of Wellington and the "Rugby Park" Hamilton (both in the North Island), with convincing victories: the first by 93-8 (the highest in history) and the second by 62-10.

In the new millennium, there was a double confrontation in 2001 in both countries, starting on June 23 at "Jade Stadium" of Christchurch, which the All Blacks authoritatively resolved the challenge by 67-19. While the December 1 at "Monumental" of Núñez, barely won 24-20.

Remember that on the last play, a ball that cleared by the fly half Felipe Contepomi without reaching the side was well used by the number eighth Scott Robertson who dived into the promised land, making convertion at goal by Andrew Merthens, for New Zealand ahead 24-20.

The June 26, 2004, at the "Waikato Stadium" of Hamilton, the Pumas were beaten mercilessly by the All Blacks (and trained by Graham Henry) with the score of 41-7.

Back in Argentina, on June 24, 2006, the Pumas received the All Blacks side at "Jose Amalfitani" Stadium of Velez Sarsfield Club in Buenos Aires and in a very balanced game victory was hard for visitors to the South Pacific, by 25-19.

Already in the 2011 World Cup, and in the quarterfinals on Saturday October 9, the All Blacks outscored the Pumas by 33-10 at Eden Park in Auckland.

Finally, as part of the first Rugby Championship, on Saturday September 8 at the "Westpac Stadium" in Wellington, New Zealand beat Argentina by 21-5 in the third round of the 4 Nations.

With 19 games played, 18 wins for New Zealand and a draw could only rescue Argentina, who totaled 225 points and received 719 and which supported 17 tries and suffered 89.
